TC4 Aerospace Milling Case
Coating validation trial on an aircraft reinforcement frame, leading to a 300-insert customer retest request.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
An internal coating-validation trial for a TC4 milling application.
This trial was part of an internal coating-validation process for a customer’s TC4 rough-milling application on an aircraft reinforcement frame at HRC 30. Before moving to a customer batch test, we compared three Premitools coating options against an incumbent insert that recorded 2-3 hours of tool life. The objective was to identify a more wear-resistant option without changing the listed cutting conditions.

A Controlled Internal Benchmark Before Customer Batch Testing.
Built an internal benchmark: Vc 47 m/min, feed 1.17 as recorded, and ap 0.6 mm.
Screened three Premitools options: TP1815-TF, TP1815-TIS and TP1815 with SDMT090307-SM inserts.
Selected evidence for the next step: recorded tool life, cutting resistance at the change point, and post-test wear images.
Recorded Results
| Tool / grade | Insert model | Brand origin | Recorded life |
| Competitor | SDMT0903 | China | 2-3 h |
| Premitools / TP1815-TF | SDMT090307-SM | China | 3 h 40 min |
| Premitools / TP1815-TIS | SDMT090307-SM | China | 4 h |
| Premitools / TP1815 | SDMT090307-SM | China | 2 h 50 min |
Recorded Outcome: The TF and TIS coating variants showed improved wear resistance. The report states an overall 25-30% improvement for the new coatings; the longest individual recorded life was 4 hours. The initial result supported moving to a customer small-batch retest.
CUSTOMER RESPONSE
After reviewing the initial validation results, the customer requested a small batch of 300 inserts for a second-round test.
This is a verified follow-up action, not a direct customer quotation.
